West Donegal is in mourning with the news that Fianna Fáil Councillor Noreen McGarvey passed away on Thursday.

The Burtonport native was an active member of Fianna Fáil having spent many years working within the party.

She joined Fianna Fáil’s David Alcorn’s team in 1999 and later worked closely with the former Leas-Cheann Comhairle Pat The Cope Gallagher in his various roles as TD, Minister and MEP.

Noreen was very involved in the local community and was involved with the local Burtonport Festival for over many years. She was also a member of Cruit Island Golf Club, and a part of various musical groups including Burtonport Variety Group, St. Columba's Church Choir in Acres and a member of Donegal Parents and Friends for people with learning disabilities.

In September, she was named as the chairperson of the committee for the newly-opened Ard an Aonaigh Close Residences, Fair Hill, Dungloe.

Noreen was elected to Donegal County Council in 2019 and was named as Cathaoirleach of the Glenties Municipal District in 2020, having been nominated to the position by councillors Anthony Molloy and Micheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuic.
