Technical report awaited in case of death of nine-year-old boy in Bundoran

A technical report is awaited in the case of a man charged with a hit-and-run collision in which a nine-year-old boy was killed in Bundoran.

Sergee Kelly has been charged in connection with the September collision that resulted in the death of Ronan Wilson from Kildress in County Tyrone.

Ronan was killed in the incident on Atlantic Way at around 9.20pm on September 23, 2023.

Kelly, a 23-year-old with an address at Upper Mullaghmore, County Sligo, has been charged with three offences under the Road Traffic Act, and is currently on bail under strict conditions.

Kelly was before Ballyshannon District Court on Friday.

The court heard that directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) are outstanding. A file in relation to the case is at ‘an advanced stage’ and a technical report is awaited before the file is submitted to the DPP, the court was informed.

Judge Ciaran Liddy remanded Kelly on bail to appear again on April 19, 2024.

Gardai seized a vehicle in connection with their probe into the incident and a technical examination was carried out.

Kelly has been charged that, having been the driver of a vehicle, which was involved in the occurrence of injury to Ronan Wilson, did fail to offer said person assistance.

He has also been charged with failing to stop and with failing to remain at the scene.

At a previous court hearing Detective Garda Shane Maye of Ballyshannon Garda station gave evidence of the arrest, charge and caution of Kelly who, when charged, told detectives: “It was wrong and I should have stopped, but I didn’t.”

Kelly later told investigating officers: “I should have, but I didn’t.”

Kelly has surrendered his passport and must sign on three times a week at Ballyshannon Garda Station. He was ordered to have no contact, either directly or indirectly, to include social media, with any of the prosecution witnesses in the case.

His mobile phone was seized by gardai and he has been prohibited from entering Bundoran.

In October, his bail conditions were updated by the court and he was ordered to stay out of Northern Ireland.
