The Student Council at St Columba’s Comprehensive School in Glenties have welcomed the implementation of road safety measures for which they lobbied.

Major safety concerns had been raised regarding the Grotto junction area, which includes the school. Among the main issues were the need for a safe crossing point for students, parking on the footpath, and cars using the grotto as an unofficial turning point.

A pedestrian crossing was put in place shortly before Christmas, and students returning from the Christmas holidays were delighted to be able to cross the road safely.

A spokesperson for St Columba’s Comprehensive School said: “Our Student Council have been lobbying our local representatives in recent years regarding this issue and are very pleased with the work Donegal County Council have recently completed.”

The students came in for much praise from the local community, with a representative from Glenties Community Development saying: “The Student Council at the Comp have been very proactive in securing the new pedestrian crossing. Well done.”

Glenties Community Development Group wishes to draw motorists’ attention to this and other changes that have taken place at the junction.

A spokesperson said via social media: “A change is taking place at the junction of the N56/R250 at the Grotto.

“To improve safety of crossing pedestrians and to prevent traffic delays, bollards are being installed at the end of the traffic island, and the lane arrow sign has been moved out in an attempt to prevent vehicles turning at this location.

“Please be mindful of these new installations.”

A further safety measure has been installed at Station Road. Pencil bollards have been put in place along the new footpath in order to increase pedestrian safety. They also prevent cars from parking on the footpath, which led to access being restricted.

Their presence will ensure clear vision of the new pedestrian crossing.

The Glenties Community Development Group spokesperson added: “Double yellow lines have been installed on the opposite side of the road for the same purpose.”
