Minister to be presented with bag of turf by Cllr Michael McClafferty

Independent councillor says he objects to the Green Party's policy on fossil fuels

A bag of turf will be presented to the Green Party leader, Minister Eamon Ryan, when he visits Lifford tomorrow, Friday.

The presentation will be made by Independent Councillor Michael McClafferty, who says while he welcomes the ministerial visit he wants to acquaint the minister with the manner in which people live in rural Donegal.

Cllr McClafferty said he objects to the Green Party policy on fossil fuels: "It is just to let minister Ryan know that this is the reality for the people of Donegal."

The Falcarragh-based representative said that there are older people in Donegal who do not have their home fitted for oil and depend on turf being cut locally to heat their homes. Cllr McClafferty said that people across the country are struggling with the cost of heating and need to be able to use local resources.

He added that planning on the N56 will be another matter he will be raising with the minister as people cannot build homes on the route.

He feels the County Development cannot be passed due to planning issues relating to the N56.

Cllr McClafferty will be inviting the minister to visit west Donegal to understand the deficits in terms of planning and infrastructure.
