There is much sadness in Donegal Town at the death of one of its best known businessmen, Ignatius Herron, better known as Nacy.

The news was shared on the Facebook page of Herron Auto, the family business, with a post saying: “We are closed until further notice due to the sad passing of Nacy Herron.

“A much loved character who will be greatly missed by all your friends and work colleagues in the Herron Auto family.

“Rest in peace Nacy.”

Herron Auto was established as an Opel and Kia dealership in 1990, having replaced  Nacy’s former Opel dealership, O & I Motors on the same premises.

Over the decades, Nacy built up a loyal customer base, and developed a solid family business which is now run by the next generation.

For many people - including the author of this article - he will be remembered as the school bus driver, conveying pupils from the rural parts of Killymard parish to Ballydevitt NS.

Many of the people commenting on the Herron Auto Facebook post describe Nacy as a gentleman and a great character.

Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
