Ukrainian chef twice the legal drink-driving limit put off the road

The father-of-two appeared before Letterkenny District Court, where he was handed a two-year driving disqualification

A Ukrainian national has been given a two-year ban from driving after being found twice the legal drink-drive limit.

Chef Viacheslaw Savchenko appeared before Letterkenny District Court this week.

The 36-year-old, whose address was given as Mulroy Woods Hotel, Milford, was charged in connection with an incident on December 1, 2022.

Inspector Paul McGee told the court that Garda O’Riordan was on mobile patrol when he received a call about a BMW being driven erratically.

Garda O’Riordan subsequently stopped the vehicle in the car park of the Mulroy Woods Hotel. The garda detected a strong smell of intoxicating liquor from Savchenko, who was subsequently conveyed to Milford Garda Station.

Savchenko, who has no previous convictions, was found to have 47mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.

Solicitor for Savchenko, Mr Kieran O’Gorman, said his client is a father-of-two who is now working as a chef in Wexford. Savchenko travelled from Wexford for the hearing.

Judge Eiteain Cunningham fined Savchenko €200 and disqualified him from driving for two years. The start of the disqualification period was postponed until April 22, 2024.
