The Donegal County Museum is currently running an exhibition of the history of Donegal Workhouses.

This Letterkenny exhibition displays information about the different workhouses across the county and why workhouses were abolished. The exhibit also displays information about emigration and evictions, artefacts from the County Archives and unique stories and images of Donegal Workhouses.

“Our visit was fantastic and the exhibition is a must-see for anyone interested in history. Well done to the County Museum and Archives for putting together such a great display, and be sure to call in to see it next time you're in Letterkenny!,” Donegal Famine Heritage Centre shared.

Across Donegal, there were once workhouses in each area of the Poor Law Union, these included: Glenties; Donegal Town; Ballyshannon; Stranorlar; Letterkenny; Milford; Dunfanaghy; and Carndonagh Workhouses respectively.

Some are still available to view such as the Donegal Famine Heritage Centre which is a history museum in the old Dunfanaghy workhouse and the Letterkenny workhouse which forms a part of the Donegal Museum.

The Donegal County Archives hold approximately 1,000 documents of information regarding the eight workhouses between 1840-1923.
