Donegal TD Joe McHugh, inset, has stressed the safety issues facing schoolchildren at Dunkineely National School
The safety issue facing schoolchildren at Dunkineely National School has been brought to the attention of the Minister for Education.
After a spate of recent incidents, Donegal TD Joe McHugh said he has voiced the continued concerns to Minister Norma Foley.
“Road safety is still a major concern for children and parents at Dunkineely National School,” McHugh, who was Minister for Education and Skills from 2018 to 2020, said. “Speed and non-adherence to the traffic light system is causing alot of worry and concern for this school community.
“I have been in contact with Councillor Barry Sweeny and Manus Boyle on this issue and I have followed up again this morning with the Minister for Education and also with Donegal County Council to further highlight these concerns and to see if measures could be put in place to ensure children and their parents/guardians are safe getting to and from school.”
Last week, video footage circulated of two cars - one in either direction - breaking red lights by the school just around the time junior and senior infants were finishing for the day.
The ongoing issue came into the spotlight recently when a truck hit a kerb and narrowly missed a group of schoolchildren last autumn. Since then, parents have been using homemade signs to appeal to motorists to slow down.
“The children were left traumatised,” Councillor Niamh Kennedy told a meeting of the Donegal Joint Policing Committee at the time.
