Senator Niall Blaney fails to be selected as candidate for European elections

The first count saw Blaney receive 803 votes, Chambers 570 and Cowen 894. Following the distribution of Ms Chambers' votes Cowen received 1,142 and Blaney 1,071.

Fianna Fáil Senator Niall Blaney was not selected as the party's candidate for Midlands North West for the upcoming Eurpean elections following a day which saw party members vote at polling stations across the region. 

Both Senator Niall Blaney and Lisa Chambers were hoping to be selected by party members but lost out to TD Barry Cowen earlier this evening. 

The first count saw Blaney receive 803 votes, Chambers 570 and Cowen 894. Following the distribution of Ms Chambers' votes Cowen received 1,142 and Blaney fell short with 1,071.

Voting took place from early today in polling stations in Galway, Sligo, Meath and Mullingar. The selection convention was held in the Mullingar Park Hotel earlier this evening.
