Donegal Fire Service is holding a major recruitment drive and people are encouraged to come along to their local station’s open evening.

These open evenings are being held in fire stations throughout the county, and those interested will have the opportunity to chat with serving firefighters about what the role entails.

Speaking at the February meeting of the Municipal District (MD) of Donegal, Cllr Barry Sweeny (FG) said: “There has been a lot of interest in the recruitment drive.

“It is not an easy job. I would hope with the week-on, week-off arrangement that it would be a more attractive job.”

Cllr Sweeny is particularly encouraging people from his hometown of Ballyshannon to attend the local recruitment evening. It takes place at Ballyshannon Fire Station on Wednesday, February 14 from 7pm to 9pm.

During the first hours, people will have the opportunity to speak to firefighters, have a look at equipment and ask questions. In the second hour Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer will provide help with the applications and give information on the requirements needed to join.

New terms for firefighters were negotiated following last year’s strike action, and as a result, a significant number of new recruits are needed.

Director Designate of Donegal MD, Garry Martin said: “The Fire Service is recruiting for all 15 inland stations.

“I would encourage anybody, male and female, who is interested to talk to the station officer and teams locally. We are encouraging a diverse service.

“Also, there is a change in the travel distance restrictions, so that will give a greater scope.”

Details of recruitment evenings are on local fire station Facebook stations and on signs at the stations. Anyone who missed their local recruitment evening can find out more by emailing fireservice@donegalcoco.ie or by calling 074 9121676.

Annual remuneration starts at €18,905 with opportunities for additional earnings. No experience is required and full training will be provided.

The closing date for receipt of completed application forms is 12 noon on Monday, February 19. Positions are available in the following stations: Bundoran, Ballyshannon, Donegal Town, Killybegs, Glencolmcille, Glenties, Gweedore, Dungloe, Falcarragh, Milford, Stranorlar, Letterkenny, Buncrana, Moville and Canrdonagh.
