Plans for Malin Head ‘shed’ to combat rural isolation for men and woman

An activity night is to be held on April 8 in the  Malin Head Community Centre

Plans are underway to form a social group for adults in the Malin Head area as part of an effort to combat rural isolation.

The plans have come from a desire to establish a Men’s Shed in the area. A recent information evening in the Malin Head Community Centre for those interested in setting up a Men’s Shed heard of the need for a social group for men and women in the area.

The manager of the community centre, Ali Farren, said it was decided that there was a need to create a space for adults to drop in to meet others.  An activity night is to be held on April 8 on the back of the meeting.

“Every adult is welcome to come and enjoy a game of bowls or pool, play cards, darts or table tennis, maybe just have a chat over a cuppa,” Mr Farren said. “This group can then decide what they would like to see the group doing in the future.”

We want men and women to come and then decide what they want to do. Do they want to have talks on bereavement or social isolation or to go on a trip? If we get a group together there are endless possibilities about what they can do. This is just a start and it might be  a way of getting people to meet people and a way of overriding rural isolation.”
