Aontu announces Patrick Brogan to run in Donegal MD

Aontu has announced the selection of Mountcharles man Patrick Brogan as the party’s first candidate in the Municipal District (MD) of Donegal.

Patrick is a father of four children with autism and has been a strong and determined voice for people with special needs and their carers for many years.

Taking to social media on April 2 to mark World Autism Awareness Day, he shared news of his intention to run for a seat in Donegal County Council.

“I'm putting myself forward to advocate for carers and children with special needs in the Donegal local elections 2024 with Aontu,” he said.

Patrick’s brother Jimmy has already declared as an independent candidate aligned to Thomas Pringle, TD.

There will certainly be no shortage of choice for voters in the Donegal MD on polling day. Of the sitting councillors, Cathaoirleach Tom Conaghan (Ind), Cllr Niamh Kennedy (Ind) Cllr Michael McMahon (SF), Cllr Noel Jordan (SF), Cllr Barry Sweeny (FG) and Cllr Micheál Naughton (FF), only Cllr Conaghan has said that he will not run in the 2024 elections.

Other candidates hoping to win one of the six seats in the MD which runs along Donegal Bay from Bundoran to Glencolmcille include the aforementioned Patrick Brogan (Aontu) and Jimmy Brogan (Ind) as well as Mayor of Donegal Town Pauric Kennedy (Ind), Diarmaid Doherty (Ind), Linda Boyle (SF), Manus Boyle (FG), Michael Hegarty (FF) and Claudia Kennedy (FF).
