Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue has been confirmed as the Director of Elections in Senator Niall Blaney's bid for Europe.

The Donegal natives and high-ranking Fianna Fáil members, have teamed up in an attempt to steer Blaney to a seat at the European parliament.

Fianna Fáil has no MEP in the five-seat Midlands-North West constituency and now have three candidates in the mix ahead of the June 7 elections.

Blaney and Senator Lisa Chambers were added to the ticket alongside TD Barry Cowen.

Despite losing out in a vote at a selection convention, Blaney was added following a strong representation by the Donegal Comhairle Dáil Ceantair.
Minister McConalogue will now add his weight to Blaney's campaign.

“Niall is a good friend and a tremendous public representative,” Minister McConalogue said.

“His work ethic is second to none and I know he will be a first-class MEP and do Donegal proud.

“The Blaney name is synonymous with politics and public service in Donegal. Niall will work for everybody in the county and the vast constituency of Midlands-North West.

“We are determined to get the vote out but more than that, we are appealing to all voters, irrespective of their political affiliations, to put Donegal first.”

Blaney served as a TD in Donegal North-East from 2002-2011 when he stepped down. He was elected to the Seanad in 2020.

Senator Blaney said: “This is a long campaign and to have Charlie heading up my team is a most welcome and positive endorsement.

“We will put maximum effort into winning a seat for Fianna Fail on June 7th. We will canvass extensively in Midlands-North West in an all-out effort to achieve a successful outcome.

“I would like nothing better than to earn the wholehearted support of my native county in this important contest.

“We’re on the edge of Europe and that brings its own challenges of being marginalised and disadvantaged. I will be a strong and vocal advocate not only for Donegal but rural communities throughout this constituency."
