Man in Letterkenny court after using Revolut card he found on street to buy cigarettes

A man who used a Revolut card which he found to purchase a packet of cigarettes at a Letterkenny shop will be sentenced next week.

Robert Makula appeared before Letterkenny District Court this week.

Makula was charged with stealing property, namely €23, the property of Neil Byrne.

When put on his election by Judge Éiteáin Cunningham, Makula opted for his case to be heard in the District Court and tendered a guilty plea.

Sergeant Maurice Doyle told the court that Makula entered Callaghan's XL, Main Street, Letterkenny, at 9.40am on Wednesday, November 1, 2023. The defendant used a Revolut card to puchase a packet of cigarettes.

The court heard that the card belonged to a Mr Neil Byrne, who did not give his permission for Makula to use it.

Sergeant Doyle said Makula had 'found the card and used it'.

Mr Patsy Gallagher, solicitor for Makula, said his client is a 29-year-old father-of-one who is in a long-term relationship.

Mr Gallagher said his client has since found himself a part-time job. At the time, he said his 'funds were zero'.

Makula has three previous convictions under the Road Traffic Act.

Judge Cunningham adjourned the matter until April 22 for sentencing. Judge Cunningham told Makula that 'the minimum' she wants by then is for the sum to have been paid back.
