Donegal man caught with cocaine at music festival avoids conviction

The man, who was found with €150 worth of cocaine during the Rory Gallagher Festival in Ballyshannon, appeared before Ballyshannon District Court

A Mountcharles man found in possession of a quantity of cocaine during a popular music festival has been spared a conviction.

John Murray was found with €150 worth of cocaine during the Rory Gallagher Festival in Ballyshannon.

Inspector Angela Cummins told Ballyshannon District Court that a substance found during a search of Murray was confirmed to be cocaine.

Murray, a 31-year-old with an address at Drumgorman, Mountcharles, was before the court.

His solicitor, Mr Tom MacSharry, said Murray understood that this is a very serious matter.

“He was at a festival and experimenting with these very dangerous substances, which are a scourge,” Mr MacSharry said.

The court heard that Murray is engaged to be married and currently works in Scotland in the fishing industry.

“There was never a situation where there wouldn't be a plea,” Mr MacSharry said, adding that his client had brought €500 in cash to court which he said could be used as a charitable donation.

Mr MacSharry said Murray fully co-operated with gardai and has no previous convictions.

Judge Liddy approved the €500 donation to Little Blue Heroes. Finding the facts proven in the case, Judge Liddy struck out the matter.
