'The number of candidates that Sinn Féin are running in the local elections is testament to our ambition to deliver change in Donegal' SF President Mary Lou MacDonald
Sinn Féin has announced the party is running a record number of candidates for the local elections in Donegal.
The party is running 18 candidates for the local elections in Donegal and two candidates for the European elections, Chris MacManus MEP and Michelle Gildernew MP.
Nine of the candidates are sitting Donegal County council members, while the other nine are newcomers or in the case of Tony McDaid, a former councillor.
Party President May Lou MacDonald declared:
“Change starts here with the local and European elections. Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have been in government for too long. This election is the first step in getting this failed government out of office. We know that change is possible, we know that change is essential and that change starts here.
“Sinn Féin is standing 335 candidates across the state in the Local Government elections. This is the largest number of candidates we have ever stood and for the first time we are standing candidates in every single electoral area.
“I am very proud of all those candidates who are going forward to stand for Sinn Féin in Donegal in the upcoming elections. The number of candidates that Sinn Féin are running in the local elections is testament to our ambition to deliver change in Donegal, with a strong team of Sinn Féin councillors across Donegal after the local elections on 7th June.
“I am delighted that this team will be joined by two strong candidates in the European election for Midlands Northwest who each bring formidable track records on working hard to deliver change.
“Chris MacManus MEP has been working hard to deliver for Donegal’s communities in Europe, standing up for Ireland’s interests and being a strong voice for Irish neutrality. He is joined by Michelle Gildernew MP, who brings a wealth of experience as a former Agriculture Minister and who will stand up for Donegal’s farmers and farming communities to ensure their voices are heard.
“Voting for Sinn Féin in this election is the first step to getting this disastrous government out of office.
“What I am saying to people in Donegal is that change starts with the local and European elections. If you want change, vote for it in the European elections, in the local elections and in the General Election when it comes.”
