In pictures: Stunning Northern Lights display captured in Donegal

Donegal stargazers were treated to a Northern Lights extravaganza on Friday night.

People right across the county were able to snap the stunning phenomenon which lit of some of Donegal's most iconic features.

Due to clear skies and an intense solar storm, viewing the aurora borealis was possible.

Northern Lights, or aurora borealis, are caused by ejections of solar material by the sun which collide with the Earth’s magnetic field. These charged particles create lights that appear near the north and south poles in latitudes.

The series of solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs) began on Wednesday and saw the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration in the United States issue its first Severe (G4) Geomagnetic Storm Watch alert since 2005.

The warning afforded people living right across the northern hemisphere a rare chance to see the Northern Lights.
