The MacManus Estate at Rossylongan, Donegal Town has been awarded €200,000 under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.

Among those to welcome the funding is Cllr Micheál Naughton (FF) who told Donegal Live: “I am delighted to welcome this funding which will enhance the walks that are already in place, with more paths and picnic tables.

“This is a project I have been working on for a number of years and it is great news for the Donegal Town area and the local communities that put in such a great effort.

“The funding will bring it a step closer to the bigger plan, which is to eventually link the Bank Walk to Rossylongan.

“I believe the MacManus Estate at Rossylongan has the potential to be a tourism destination for south Donegal along the same lines as Ards Forest Park.”

The MacManus Estate at Rossylongan is one of three Donegal outdoor projects set to receive a combined total of €900,000 in funding under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.

Muckish Railway Walk which has been allocated €500,000 to upgrade and complete a 1.5 km and final section to greenway standard. Millside Walk Fintown will receive €200,000 to develop a 2 km recreational walking path for public use looping through Coillte forestry on the banks of the River Finn.

The MacManus Estate

The MacManus family who owned the estate bequeathed it to the people of Donegal Town many decades ago.

Around two years ago, a small team from Coillte began carrying out work to develop the estate as an amenity. The work was supported by Donegal Council.

It was driven by the Friends of Rossylongan community group who were keen to ensure that the important history and heritage of the site was preserved while enhancing the amenity and making it accessible to everyone.

Since then, a series of fantastic carved sculptures and benches by Gintas Carving has been added. And the addition of the Woodpecker coffee pod tops off a lovely few hours of escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
