A man has been fined €200 and convicted for possession of cannabis after failing to make a charitable donation which would have spared him a conviction.

Bernard Heading, 62, of 4 Pine Trees, Letterbarra, was due before Donegal District Court on Monday but failed to attend.

He had previously admitted possession of cannabis which was found after his car was searched at Quay Street, Donegal Town on December 18, 2021.

At a court sitting on March 6, the defendant was given an opportunity to avoid a conviction by paying €200 to Donegal Hospice by June 24. He was told that if the payment was not made, the order would default to a €200 fine.

Heading was not present at the court sitting on June 24, and his solicitor said that numerous attempts had been made to contact him but he had not responded.

Judge Michael Connellan imposed the conviction and fine.
