The participants from the March in Memory- Photo Mary Rodgers
Over 100 people took part in the March in Memory in west Donegal on Saturday, clocking up 25km and raising €10,000 all for a good cause - with Daniel O’Donnell even making an appearance.
The march was in memory of Donald Devenney who spent his final years in the capable hands of the staff in Dungloe Community Hospital and all monies raised will go towards its Patients Comfort Fund.
The route the marchers took was from Leo’s Tavern and went via Annagry, Kincasslagh, and Burtonport towards the final destination at Dungloe Hospital, a 25k trek.
“ We are delighted with how it went.” says Karl Doherty, who was one of the organisers. “When we started the project we didn’t think we’d get that many people walking but on the day over 100 people completed the march.
“The Dungloe Community Hospital has been at the heart of our local area for many years and hundreds of families have benefited from the hospital.”
The group left at 9am and arrived at the hospital at 5:30pm and raised over €10,000 for the community hospital through a GoFundMe and in the bucket collection. Some family members joined the march, with Daniel O’Donnell joining in his native Kincasslagh.
The weather started off poorly for the group as they wore their ponchos to protect them from the wind and rain at Leo’s tavern to Kincasslagh but luckily it picked up about midday and they had a nice afternoon to complete the walk.
The group stopped and played a few tunes along the way. The evening was complete when some patients and staff in Dungloe Community Hospital were able to come outside with the marchers and listen to a few songs being played.
The GoFundMe is still open if people wish to donate, they can do so here.
