South Donegal man up for alleged burglaries now charged with stealing boat engine

A Donegal man due to stand trial for a spate of burglaries has appeared in court again on further theft charges.

Timmy O'Gara appeared at Letterkenny District Court charged with another burglary.

The 21-year-old, who has no previous convictions, already faces 21 charges connected with alleged burglaries across Donegal at various premises in Cloghan, Kilcar, Glencolmcille, Inver, Carrick, Fintown, Teelin and Killybegs, between May and July, 2023.

The Director of Public Prosecutions has already directed that O'Gara stand trial at the next sitting of Letterkenny Circuit Court in October.

He is to appear in court again on September 16, 2024, to allow for the service of a book of evidence in all these cases.

O'Gara, of Doonalt, Glencolmcille, appeared before Judge Deirdre Gearty on the new charges.

O'Gara has now been charged with stealing a Yamaha 2B outboard boat engine on August 6 at Cladnageragh Pier in Kilcar, the property of Arthur McLaughlin.

He is also charged with handling the same property at Towney, Kilcar on August 7, knowing it was stolen or were reckless as to whether it was stolen.

Garda Sergeant Maurice Doyle told the court that there had been no directions for the Director of Public Prosecutions in the case as of yet.

The solicitor for the accused, Mr Frank Murphy, said Gardai had no objections to bail under a number of conditions.

They include that O'Gara observe a curfew of 11pm to 6am each night, sign on at Donegal Town Garda Station twice a week, be of good behaviour and provide a phone number to Gardai to be contactable on. The case was adjourned until September 9 and legal aid was granted.
