shortage of car parking spaces remains an issue in Donegal Town
The need for additional car parking space in Donegal Town has been well documented, but Donegal County Council say residents’ objections and shortage of land are big factors.
Anyone who would like to make land available for purchase for the purpose of a new car park is encouraged to contact Donegal County Council.
Speaking at a recent meeting of the Municipal District (MD) of Donegal Town, area roads officer Mark Sweeney said that a pocket of land adjacent to Castle Street had been looked at for a public car park.
“What happened there was that the residents didn’t want it used,” he told the meeting.
“We are all the time looking for land in Donegal Town and trying to secure it for parking.
“Believe me, if something becomes available we will be jumping on it.”
The issue of a parking shortage in the town was raised by Cllr Micheál Naughton (FF). He welcomed the agreement that was reached with the St John Bosco Centre committee to allow the centre’s car park to be used by the public.
The councillor also welcomed plans to develop an area of land beside the St John Bosco Centre for parking. But he said it fell short of what was needed.
“Donegal Town is no small town anymore,” said the councillor. “It is a very busy town.
“We are starting into a new five year term here. We need to start putting something in place now.
“We need to work with the community and work with the council.
“Everyone who comes into the town spends a pound. We are depending on the business people to pay rates.”
The councillor said parking was also very much needed on the Laghey side of town.
Mr Sweeney agreed that there was a great need, saying: “As soon as space becomes available, I am looking at it.
“But there is no magic wand here. People have to be willing to sell land to create space.”In relation to parking concerns raised by a group representing local businesses, Mr Sweeney said: “We will be replying to the business group letting them know what plans are in place.”
Cllr Noel Jordan suggested a public appeal for expressions of interest from people willing to provide land.
“We are trying hard to address this,” he said.
“Could people let us know if they have land for sale?”
