Renowned poet and novelist Frances Browne
The annual Frances Browne Literary Festival will be kicking off on October 10 this year in Donegal.
In honour of the renowned Irish poet and novelist Frances Browne, the festival celebrates writers, artists and musicians through hosting a range of events to showcase the best of Irish talent.
The festival aspires to raise awareness of the achievements of Frances Browne, as well as other often forgotten literary voices from the north-west of Ireland such as Sarah Leech. During the festival, the Frances Browne Award is given to those who have worked to promote and preserve Frances' legacy.
To celebrate the legacy of such artists, the festival incorporates all art-forms including theatre, music, singing, song-writing, drawing, painting and photography. Organisers of the annual festival have curated a programme of events which will cater to all age groups.
What events are planned:
On Thursday 10 October, the festival will be launched at Kee's Hotel located in the birthplace of Frances Browne, Stranorlar. Professor Thomas McClean, a visiting professor from the University of Otago in New Zealand, will give a short talk on Frances Browne to kick off the festival. The free event takes place at 3:00pm and everyone is welcome to join.

Later that day at 7:00pm, local artist group, the Fiach Arts Circle, will mount its annual exhibition at the Old Parish Centre in Stranorlar. The exhibition will run for the duration of the festival and is free to enter.
One of the unique aspects of the festival is that events are presented in Irish, English and Ulster Scots. At 8pm at the Balor Arts Centre, the Gaeilge/Gàidhlig concert will be taking place which will present a night of song in Irish, English and Gáidhlig. No matter what level of Irish you have, all are welcome to attend the cabaret style event. Tickets range from €12-15 and can be purchased online via the Balor Arts Centre website.
The fascinating Tenx9 event will also be taking place for the first time ever in Donegal as part of the 2024 festival line-up. Tenx9 is a storytelling event where nine people have up to ten minutes each to tell a true story from their own life. This unique event is sure to captivate its audience and so seats must be reserved beforehand. The show is free to attend and will take place at Balor Arts Centre at 8pm on Saturday 12 October.
