Gardai have issued an alert over bogus callers
Donegal homeowners have been put on alert over bogus callers.
The appeal by An Garda Siochana follows reports from a number of residents in the Churchill area in relation to suspicious callers to their home.
These callers were men in a white van who were offering to fix their roof or to do some powerwashing.
While there, the man also enquired about items on the properties in question and whether or not these items were for sale.
“In light of these reports, we wish to issue a reminder for those with family members who may be susceptible to having bogus callers and rogue traders call to their homes,” a Garda spokesperson said.
“Such callers may offer services such as powerwashing, painting, selling goods etc. They prefer to target the more vulnerable and people who live alone.”
Gardai have issued advice to people not to engage with such callers.
The Garda spokesperson added: “Don't open your door to anyone before you are confident that they are known to you or that they have a genuine reason to be there.
“Use a chain lock for added security. Bogus callers can be intimidating and often refuse to take no for an answer.
“Contact Gardaí immediately should you encounter such a caller and try to give as much information as possible, description of person, registration number, direction of travel etc.
“We ask you to be vigilant when out and about and report suspicious activity/vehicles/callers to us immediately.
“Remember: If in doubt, keep them out.”
