The man was stopped for careless driving and tested positive for cannabis
A man who was caught drug-driving in Letterkenny has told a court that it was his first time smoking cannabis.
Joseph McGinley appeared before Letterkenny District Court.
The court was told that McGinley, 31, was stopped driving at 7.55pm at Dromore, Letterkenny on June 16, 2023 for driving carelessly.
He was taken to Letterkenny Garda Station and a blood sample taken which proved positive for cannabis.
The accused man's solicitor, Ms Maureen Gallagher, said her client lived at home with his parents and had been off work for the past six months due to injury.
The court was told McGinley, of Mimosa Court, Gobnascale in Derry, was fully cooperative with Gardai and had no previous convictions.
Ms Gallagher added that this was the first time that McGinley had smoked cannabis but was unfortunately stopped a short time later by Gardai.
Judge Eiteain Cunningham fined McGinley €250 and disqualified him from driving for one year.
