The defendant also faces charges of obstructing a peace officer, possession of cocaine and public order matters

Man who allegedly assaulted Donegal garda to be sent forward for trial

A 24-year-old man has been remanded on continuing bail for allegedly assaulting a garda, as well as obstructing a garda, possessing cocaine, and for public order matters.

Brannon Mullan of 4 Drum Road, Omagh, Tyrone was arrested and charged by arrangement ahead of Ballyshannon District Court sitting on Friday, October 18. 

He is charged with assaulting Garda Mark Sweeney and causing him harm and obstructing Garda Sweeney in the course of his duty as a peace officer. Mullan is also charged with threatening, abusive or insulting behaviour, and being intoxicated to the extent of being a danger to himself or others.

The offences are alleged to have taken place at the Diamond, Donegal Town on September 2, 2023.

Inspector Sean McDaid told the court that the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) consented for the defendant to be sent forward for trial at the circuit court.

Judge Sandra Murphy remanded the defendant on continuing bail to appear before Donegal District Court on December 4 for service of the book of evidence.

Mullan is further charged with possession of cocaine valued at €50 at Ballyshannon Garda Station on September 3, 2023. He was also remanded to Donegal District Court on December 4 on that matter. 

Solicitor Kieran O’Gorman said his client was a legal aid candidate who was before the court on serious matters.

Judge Murphy said there was no issue in granting legal aid subject to the solicitor submitting a statement of means.
