A chef who had been living and working in France has been arrested on his return to Ireland for offences which occurred in 2021.

He was brought to Ballyshannon District Court where he was granted bail after it was confirmed that he had secured employment in Ireland, and that his partner and child had recently returned to Ireland.

Daniel Walsh, 31, of Breaffy Road, Ballina, County Mayo is charged that on July 16, 2021 at 40 Woodlawns, Enniscrone, Sligo, he threatened to kill David Henry or cause him serious harm.

He is also charged with causing criminal damage by kicking the wing mirror off a car belonging to David Henry at the same place and on the same date.

Walsh is further charged that on June 7, 2021 at Main Street, Easkey, Sligo, he assaulted Josh Conroy causing him harm, and assaulted Adam Conroy causing him harm. And he is facing a charge of production of an article, namely a hurley, to intimidate or cause serious injury, while attacking Josh Conroy.

At Ballyshannon District Court on Friday, November 1, it was heard that he had admitted his involvement in the offence but went to France in August 2021 and had been there since.

Gardaí applied for a European Arrest Warrant which led to Walsh’s arrest at Dublin airport on October 31.

Initially, gardaí objected to bail but solicitor Elise Martin-Vignerte of Macguill and Company, Dundalk told the court that Walsh’s partner and child had moved back to Ireland and wanted to stay in the country to be near family.

Having confirmed that the defendant, a chef, had secured a job in Ireland, gardaí withdrew the objection.

Walsh was remanded on bail with independent surety of €10,000 provided by his mother, of which €5,000 was lodged, and his own cash bond of €3,000.

Bail conditions included surrendering his passport, signing on at an agreed garda station, staying away from injured parties or anyone who is connected with the case, and being of good behaviour.

He is to reside at the address given to the court, and be contactable on his phone 24 hours a day.

The matter was adjourned to December 12 for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
