Seamus Rodgers has been remembered as ‘a man of communities’

Tributes have been paid to former Donegal county councillor Seamus Rodgers who has died at the age of 90.

The Annagry man sat on the council for almost 40 years up until 1999 and contested local elections until 2019 after first being elected in 1960.

Over 46 years, he fought 12 Daíl elections standing for Sinn Féin, The Workers’ Party, Democratic Left and Labour, as well as two European elections.

He was also a union representative with the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union which became Siptu.

Known for his contributions to the GAA he served the organisation at all levels - playing, coaching, managing and administration. A member of the back-to-back Dungloe championship-winning team of 1957 and ‘58, he served a three-year term as county chairman in the late 1970s. The GAA President honoured Mr Rodgers’s contributions in his annual award presentations this year.

Among the tributes paid, Donegal Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty described the late politician as “a kind and compassionate man who was full of integrity”.

“Séamus was a passionate voice for the working people and his local communities. He has left a big legacy,” he said.

Mullachdubh Community Centre described him as “a legend in our communities”.

“A great friend to our community always, ever on hand to help. Seamus lived across the strand in Annagry West all his life, a big family man, but he was a man of the people, a man of communities, a person who would go the last mile and more to help anyone.”

Mr Rodgers is survived by his wife Teresa and daughter Rosemary (Neil), sisters Mary (Dunlewey) Bríd, (Annagry), nieces, nephews and extended family.

His remains will repose in McGlynn’s Funeral Home Dungloe on Thursday, November 21 from 4.30pm until Rosary at 8pm and on Friday from 3pm until 6pm followed by private removal to his home.
