Killybegs Fire Service on Bridge Street this morning

Councillor Manus Boyle has described the scene this morning in Killybegs as "heartbreaking."

Bridge Street in the town was flooded last night, with cars almost submerged, and many homes and businesses feeling the effects of Storm Bert. Although the water level has since lowered, Killybegs is now starting the huge clean-up job and Cllr Boyle expressed his gratitude to those who helped restore some sort of order.

"Heavy rainfall has caused significant damage to Bridge Street in Killybegs and the surrounding areas in Donegal," he posted. "It is heartbreaking to witness the extent of the flooding this morning, with many homes and businesses affected. Thankfully, water levels have receded following the removal of a tree that was obstructing the river’s flow.

"My thoughts are with everyone impacted by this unfortunate event. I extend my gratitude to the Killybegs Fire Service, Killybegs Coast Guard and everyone helping, for their tireless efforts during this challenging time."

Deputy Thomas Pringle added: "Bridge Street in Killybegs has been severely affected by flooding today, including my office, many homes and businesses. My thoughts are with everyone impacted. I’ll work to ensure supports and assistance are made available to those badly affected once the full extent of the damage can be assessed."
