The seven-show run of ‘Shrek The Musical’ in An Grianan Theatre begins on December 3
Letterkenny Music and Drama Group open their seven-show run of ‘Shrek The Musical’ in An Grianan Theatre on Tuesday, December 3, running until Saturday, December 7.
Co-directed by Tina Higgins and Maire McGinley, this musical extravaganza is selling fast, with many performances sold out already, and minimal tickets for the remaining performances.
LMDG are delighted to be staging a ‘relaxed performance’ on Friday, December 6, a sensory-friendly show for children and adults with additional needs, with some scary characters removed, altered sound and lighting, and a quiet space available in the theatre.
Grumpy, gruff, green ogre Shrek lives alone in his swamp. The world is fearful and mocking of him, and he is more than happy to leave the world to itself, in turn.
Suddenly, his hermit existence is thrown open, when a group of homeless fairy-tale characters — Pinocchio, the Gingerbread Man, the Three Little Pigs, and more — burst upon his swamp, seeking refuge from the persecution of the cruel, vertically-challenged Lord Farquaad. Shrek seeks out Farquaad, who offers him a deal: if Shrek rescues Princess Fiona (whom Farquaad wishes to marry for her crown), then Farquaad will ensure the return of Shrek’s swamp by returning the fairy tale creatures to their homes.

Desperate to get his swamp back, he travels to Princess Fiona’s prison, rescues her from a fire-breathing dragon, and then – scariest of all – is forced to get to know the princess as he tries to bring her back to evil Farquaad. With dazzling sets, whimsical puppetry, high energy dance numbers, and laughs by the minute, Shrek the Musical transforms the contemporary children’s book and popular animated feature film into a stage musical that is sure to entertain and make audiences believers in happy endings for all.
Previous productions by LMDG include Sister Act, Legally Blonde, Hairspray, All Shook Up, and our AIMS award-winning Calendar Girls The Musical. The group also recently staged a hugely successful ‘Lip Sync Battle’ with St. Eunans GAA Club, and on the weekend of December 6, our one-act play ‘Cider Park’ will be competing in the All Ireland One-Act Drama Final in Naas. What a busy time!
