Monday’s meeting of Donegal County Council was adjourned for 39 minutes in memory of west Donegal politician Seamus Rodgers, who was laid to rest on Saturday.

The Annagry native sat on the Council for 39 years, between 1960 and 1999.

He contested local elections until 2019, the last seven for Labour, after first being elected in 1960. In total, he contested 12 Dáil, 11 council, two European and three Údarás na Gaeltachta elections.

The 39-minute adjournment was proposed by Labour Councillor Martin Farren.

“When you hold your seat for 39 years, you’re doing something right,” Councillor Farren said. “He gave great support and service to the people in his area.

Fianna Fáil Councillor Ciaran Brogan described the late Mr Rodgers as “one of those people you thought was around forever”.

“He inspired everything that was good about politics and about people,” Councillor Brogan said. “He was a very very passionate man about his politics and about his people as a whole.”

Councillor Gary Doherty, on behalf of Sinn Féin, said Mr Rodgers’ record was “exemplary . . . and it was almost unmatched”

“He was a community representative more than anything else,” Councillor Doherty said.

Councillors Michael McBride, Mícheál Choilm Mac Giolla Easbuig, Jimmy Kavanagh, Denis McGee and Michael McClafferty all paid tribute, as did Donegal County Council Chief Executive, John McLaughlin.
