Gerry McKeever
Letterkenny barber Gerry McKeever is running for his first-ever election independently.
The businessman has always had an interest in politics and even wrote a book on the subject, titled, Benocracy – Democracy’s Last Change.
On why he decided to run, Gerry said: “I'm standing because I am deeply concerned about the rapid erosion of our rights, freedoms, and social structures. The decline has become almost normalised, but it doesn't have to be this way.”
He believes Irish politics needs imagination and idealism to avoid further decline, hoping to offer a new direction and a chance for real change if elected.
Like many candidates, he has concerns with the current housing crisis, and his plan to tackle this includes significant infrastructural investment and a complete overhaul of the planning process.
“One of my key policies is a radical approach to housing. The current parties suggest that affordable homes in Ireland cost upwards of €280,000, which shows just how out of touch they are with reality.”
He also aims to address the ongoing defective blocks crisis, which has affected thousands across the county, and beyond.
Wanting to ensure that there is a free, easy-to-navigate, application process for redress, he plans to make it easier for those affected to get the support they need, by working tirelessly to make sure no one is left behind, if elected.
Mr McKeever is confident that by embracing technology and techniques used across Europe, such as modular housing, the cost of homes can be brought down to €160,000, or even less.
He hopes that initiatives, such as this one, will encourage the young people of Ireland to stay put, and not emigrate, declaring that no one should have to watch their grandchildren grow up through a screen.
At the core of his vision is the belief that a connected, well-supported Ireland is a safer, more prosperous Ireland.
“The challenges we face are significant, but they are not insurmountable. Together, we can build a brighter future for Donegal and for all of Ireland.
“We need to invest in our people, our communities, and our future. That’s the message I’m bringing to the people of Donegal.”
