Donegal general election- Carol Gallagher- People Before Profit

Carol Gallagher

People Before Profit candidate Carol Gallagher was born and raised in Strabane, Co Tyrone, where she has worked in various teaching and educational roles for 30 years.

In deciding to run for Donegal in the upcoming general election, she said: “My political career ambitions are minimal”, believing, “real change comes from people on the ground”.

However, her political activism is constant, having a strong record of campaigning for a wide range of social issues.

If elected, she says: “Donegal will get a champion for the underdog, the unrepresented and those whose voices are not heard enough at the highest levels in government. I would work tirelessly to amplify the voices of Donegal people and ensure that Donegal no longer remains the forgotten county of Ireland.”

She wants to focus on bringing justice to those who have been “put through hell” over the defective blocks crisis.

“The disregard held by the main Dáil parties, for ordinary working people in Donegal, is best exemplified in this scandal and it must be put right by the next Dáil government as a matter of national urgency.”

The teacher is passionate that regardless of income, everyone should have access to adequate housing, health, and education.

“Public housing is the most effective way to deliver decent secure homes, and this can be done through a State Construction company, based on need, and not greedy profit-driven private developers and vulture funds.”

The activist, who works as an intensive special needs teacher, also plans to fight for more funding and resources for all schools, if elected.

She plans to continuously fight for workers’ rights and remain committed to advocating for gender equality.

“This includes providing quality and affordable childcare and making extortionate fees that many parents currently face a thing of the past.

“I will also fight to improve public transport throughout the county that generates so much social isolation in rural areas, especially amongst the elderly.”

Her activism extends to international issues, including strong support for Palestinian rights, and being vocal in speaking out against racism, including the scapegoating of immigrants for the past failures of Irish governments.
