Rose Gallagher from Portnason, Ballyshannon, with the 36 cakes she has baked for friends and family this Christmas
A Donegal woman decided to share a story about her wonderful woman, who brings Christmas cheer to all.
Debby Flanagan, from Bundoran, describes Rose Gallagher from Portnason as 'Ballyshannon's Rose' and Rose, at 93 years of age, is loved by all who know her. Debby is so proud of Rose, she put her appreciation in writing to share.
Just one example of just how good Rose is, is the fact the great great-great-grandmother has made 36 Christmas cakes for her family and friends.
“Where do you begin to tell the story of an amazing lady who at 93 would put women half her age to shame and whose joy for life and all it has to offer is remarkable?, Debby says.
“‘Granny Rose' as we all fondly refer to her has lived and is still living a very 'full life' as a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great great-great-grandmother. Rose has the stamina and get-up and go of a woman quarter her age. Her interests are many but we are in awe of her love of style. She is always turned out impeccably - her hair, nails, with every outfit matching to perfection.
“She has a love of the Friary, never missing her Tuesdays, Thursdays and indeed any Sunday she can. Prayer is so important to her and many have noted that she arrives looking like a ‘model’ and that she is truly - a model of faith, hard work and a great homemaker!
“Rose reared a family of five when times were tough and her husband had to work away in England to care for the family and it wasn't easy. Rose used to knit for 'extra income' and her Aran cardigans and sweaters are well renowned!

“As for baking, her apple tarts would put Mr Kipling to shame! Every Christmas the 'cake list' would begin and everyone Granny Rose cared for got a Christmas cake. The number of cakes she has baked over the years has to be a record!
“This year it's 36 and my hand on heart, I would rather climb Mount Everest than take on that task. The mixing of ingredients alone would tire out the youngest and most agile among us! Sitting chatting with Granny is inspiring as she remembers everything past and present and has great knowledge on every subject matter, particularly current affairs and is up to date on all events and local happenings.
“I find myself amazed by this great lady. Her support and love for our family too.through good times and hard times. This is the measure of a woman who has great compassion and dedication to those she cares for ‘Granny Rose'. I admire you and respect and love you. Thank you for being one of the 'finest' ladies I have ever met! Wishing you a very Happy Christmas and a healthy and happy 2025.”
