Niall took to Facebook to announce his departure, saying: “I am sad to say that after six great years managing the Donegal Railway Museum, I am moving on to a new position.
“It’s been a career highlight for me, working with our great Board, staff Members and the public. We have taken our museum to new heights, culminating in winning the top heritage attraction in the county and one of the top five in Ireland.
“Although I am moving to a new tourism role in Inishowen, closer to home, I won’t be cutting all ties. I hope to still be involved in the background, supporting this unique jewel in south Donegal which celebrates our unique railway heritage.
“It has been an absolute pleasure and a real privilege working in this organisation, and I would like to thank everyone for their support over the years.”
Among those to pay tribute in response to the Facebook post is Mayor of Donegal Town Pauric Kennedy who said: “All the best of luck Niall in your new venture.
“Well done for all your hard work in the Railway Centre.”
Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council, Cllr Niamh Kennedy said: “Best wishes Niall you will be missed.”
This was echoed by Eleanor Hanna of Hanna Hats, who said: “Best of luck Niall, you will be missed.”
Local artist Nuala Toland said: “Ah no, very sad to hear that news Niall. You added so much to the Donegal Railway Heritage Museum and made it a hugely more attractive and interactive place to visit. Bringing Drumbo back to Donegal Town must be a highlight among many in your very fruitful years at this unique Railway museum. Well done on all your hard work, enthusiasm and foresight, to dare to imagine and make things happen.”
His departure leaves a wonderful opening for someone who is passionate about heritage and tourism, and who is experienced in dealing with funding bodies.
