Permission granted for change of use for former Donegal Town restaurant

The former Manhattan Steakhouse on Donegal Town Main Street is to be developed as an apartment

The granting of planning permission clears the way for a former Donegal Town restaurant to be developed as residential accommodation.

Permission for the change of use of the former Manhattan Steakhouse premises to an apartment was granted to Tom Lyons subject to six conditions. Most notable of these conditions is: “The apartment the subject of this permission shall be used as a permanent home only and shall not be used for the purposes of a holiday home or for short-term letting purposes.

“Such use to be commenced only if authorised by a separate Grant of Permission.”

The applicant indicated to Donegal County Council as part of the application process that it was intended that the premises would be a residence for a family member moving home from abroad.

Further conditions relate to the construction process, and to the payment of €1,440.60 as a contribution in respect of public infrastructure and facilities.

The Manhattan Steakhouse has been closed since before the Covid-19 pandemic. Its kitchen was a hub for the Chef Aid volunteers during the period of cocooning at the height of the pandemic, when hot meals were prepared daily and delivered to elderly and vulnerable people in the wider Donegal Town area.
