Widespread regret was occasioned in west Donegal on hearing of the recent death of Ms Rosie Smith, Cruit, Kincasslagh, which took place in Dungloe Community Hospital.
Aged 102 years, Rosie had been a patient in Dungloe for the last number of years, having been admitted there shortly after her 100th birthday.
Rosie was the last surviving member of the well-known Doherty family, Cruit. She was predeceased by her husband Jimmy, late of Aberdeenshire, Scotland in 1955, by her sisters Susan and Mary and her brother John.
Like many more at the time, Rosie went to work in Scotland in her youth like many others and while there, met her future husband Jimmy. She returned to live in Cruit in 1956.
A very energetic and hardworking person, she enjoyed working outdoors on her lands, setting potatoes and vegetables. Rosie was an outstanding neighbour and was popular with all age groups. Because of her unique age, she had a great knowledge of local family history, which she enjoyed discussing with people.
She will be sadly missed in Cruit and surrounding areas. Her funeral earlier this month took place at Cruit Cemetery, following mass in St Mary’s Church, Kincasslagh, celebrated by Rev. Fr. Pat Ward, PP, who also officiated at the graveside. The soloist at the mass was Pauline Glackin, accompanied by her brother Joe.
Readers at the mass were her grandchildren Jonathon, Jack and Deborah Smith. She is survived by her sons Jim in Arlands, Stephen in Cruit and Colin in Edinburgh, in-laws, grandchildren, nephews, nieces and other relatives to whom deepest sympathy is extended.
