The much anticipated first salmon of the 2025 salmon season from the river Drowes has been caught.
While the season opening was hampered somewhat by recent bad weather and in particular, the effects of Storm Éowyn, the fishery re-opened on Wednesday.
Derry angler John Shields claimed the first salmon honours when he landed at 10lbs beauty, taken on t worm from the Mill Pool.
A spokesperson for the Drowes Fishery outlined the recent challenges, saying: "Water levels had risen following storm Eowyn which caused extensive damage locally.
"Power and phone lines were restored at the fishery on Wednesday. Thanks to the ESB crews for their work to repair damaged lines.
"Many trees were uprooted during the storm, including along the river bank. Care should be taken by anglers as work continues to remove the very many downed trees, especially as high winds are forecast at times over the bank holiday weekend."
