The state of Donegal's public toilets paints a bad picture of county - Naughton

A Donegal County Councillor has said the poor state of public toilets in Donegal shows that “someone has taken their eye off the ball.”

Cllr Micheál Naughton of Fianna Fáil used the example of the Donegal Town toilets and said they are a bad advertisement for the county as a whole.

If Donegal is to take itself seriously as a place to attract tourists, Naughton, having clean public toilets is one of the fundamentals. At the December meeting of the Donegal Municipal District,  Naughton complained that there was no budget for the upkeep of the toilets.

“The public toilets in Donegal Town, it’s one of the leading towns in the county in terms of tourism, and the state of the public conveniences in that town leaves a lot to be desired,” he said.

“I did take a walk around there and looked at it. There’s a plan to renovate and do them up. When I talked to Donegal County Council, they said there’s no money there. We have to be serious about it. Either we’re maintaining public conveniences, or we’re not. We have to make sure there’s a budget there. This is right around the county.

“There are a huge number of toilets around this county that need to be looked at. There’s no point in putting it down on paper. It’s easier to maintain than rebuild. Why do they get into this state? It’s someone taking their eye off the ball. The Donegal Town toilets are right in the heart of the town, but they should never have been left in that condition.”
