Míchéal Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig says an engineer needs to be appointed to oversee the work that has to be done on Donegal's islands

A Glenties MD county councillor has urged that more staff is needed to oversee projects on the islands.

At an Island’s Committee Meeting in Arranmore, councillor Míchéal Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig brought up the issue that funding has been lost for many projects in the Donegal islands, due to the lack of staff at Donegal County Council.

“There are so many things to be done, Mr Mac Giolla Easbuig told DonegalLive. “There is a pier in Inisbofin to be raised, a slip in Tory Island to be widened, another pier in Gabhla to be fixed, work to be done in piers in Arranmore and Inisfree also. If a team was actually put in place by Donegal County Council to get these things done.

“We were putting in for funding this year with Roinn na Gaeltachta, however, since there isn’t enough staff in Donegal County Council, they didn't apply for funding for any of these projects.”

Other county councillors based in the Glenties MD were in attendance at the meeting, along with representatives from the Donegal County Council and the islands.

“Donegal County Council is letting the island communities down,” Míchéal Cholm Mac Giolla Easbuig added. “We need to have an engineer appointed to oversee the work that has to be done on these islands.”
