The Calories for Cancer Challenge Day in Donegal Town has raised over €2,000 for local charities.

Taking place on June 1, at the Diamond, participants took part in fitness challenges to raise money for North West Hospice in Sligo and Relay for Life Donegal.

Organised by Task Fitness and Donegal Dragons, contestants competed on burning the most calories in 60 seconds on a machine of their choice, including an assault bike, a rowing machine, a ski erg, and a dragon boat erg.

The top male and female contestants won a one-month free membership at Task Fitness and a year’s membership of Donegal Dragons.

“The day went very well,” said Kevin Clarke of Task Fitness. “We are happy with the outcome.

“We are currently still raising money, but at the moment we are at a little over the €2,000 mark. On the day, we had a great turnout, and we are happy with the turnout.

“With ourselves at Task Fitness and Donegal Dragons, we were approached, but I already, in the back of my mind, had plans to create a bit of fundraising for the North West Hospice and Donegal Relay for Life.

“If you connect with us on social media, you will see there is a QR code that they can contribute through that, with a link in the post.

"Donegal Dragons are heavily involved with Relay for Life, and we decided we would come together and work towards creating an opportunity to raise money for our chosen charities."

Relay for Life Donegal is a 24-hour relay that brings people together to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones, and support ongoing research through the Irish Cancer Society.

As regards North West Hospice in Sligo, Kevin explained a personal link. He said: “My wife’s father passed away last October, and the North West Hospice in Sligo was fantastic, and we felt we had to give something back.

“With our business opening in January, we were developing a bit of a following, and we felt the opportunity was to create an event to get a bit of money for the hospice.”
