Donegal was only behind Dublin and Cork in HRB statistics
The Health Research Board (HRB) has revealed that Donegal was the third highest county for cases for those treated for alcohol as a main problem in 2024 in the country.
A report released by the HRB entitled ‘2024 Alcohol Treatment Demand’ showed that 535 people were treated for alcohol-related issues were from Donegal in 2024.
Despite Donegal having the eighth-highest population of the counties studied, it ranked as the third-highest county for alcohol treatment in 2024.
Only Dublin (2,562) and Cork (815) had a higher number of people treated for alcohol-related issues in 2024.

Longford had the fewest number of people treated for alcohol-related issues in 2024, with 50 people, followed by Westmeath with 62 people.
The 535 people treated for alcohol-related problems in Donegal in 2024 represented 6.1% of the national number of cases, which totalled 8,745. It also represents the second-highest annual figure for alcohol-related cases in Donegal since 2017, with 2023 being the highest figure recorded, with 552 people in Donegal being treated for alcohol as a main problem.
Data was gathered by the HRB from the National Drug Treatment Reporting System, the national surveillance system that records and reports on cases of drug and alcohol treatment in Ireland.
