Fifty swimmers – mostly local athletes and members of the Gartan Swimmers group – will take on one of Donegal’s most spectacular open-water challenges this week, the Sheephaven Bay Swim, in aid of RNLI Lifeboats Donegal and Donegal Hospice.

The 3.5-kilometre route from Duncap Head back to Portnablagh Pier will test participants in deep, potentially cold and choppy waters, while offering some of the most stunning coastal views in the county. Two floats will be compulsory for all swimmers.

The event is supported by Letterkenny Credit Union and the Errigal Training Centre in Falcarragh, whose owner, Frankie Veldman, brings a personal passion for the sport, having competed in swimming and triathlons from a young age.

“This is more than a swim – it’s a celebration of community, endurance, and generosity,” said event organiser Keith McClean. “Thanks to our sponsors and safety teams, we can focus on raising funds for two services that mean so much to the people of Donegal.”

The swim will take place on Saturday 16 August, with registration for participants opening at 8:30am at Portnablagh Pier. The race will start from Duncap Head at 9:45am, with swimmers transported to the start by ferry boats. The first finisher is expected back at the pier at around 11:15am, followed at 12 noon by a BBQ, live music and a prize presentation at Race HQ.

Alongside awards for the fastest male and female swimmers, prizes will be given to those who most accurately predict their own swim pace and finish time for the 3.5K crossing. Every participant will receive a handmade medal to mark their achievement.

The swim will be supported by Sheephaven Sub Aqua Club, the Irish Red Cross, volunteer ferry crews, and additional kayak and RIB escorts to ensure safety throughout the event.

All proceeds will go directly to RNLI Lifeboats Donegal and Donegal Hospice through the official iDonate page at Sheephaven Bay Swim Challenge.
