Dungloe GAA paid tribute to Donegal GAA icon Sean O’Donnell, one of their club’s “great footballers of all time,” after he passed away on Sunday, August 24.

Sean O’Donnell, a former county footballer and manager, peacefully passed away at Hillcrest Nursing Home, Letterkenny. He lived in Stranorlar and was formerly of Belcruit, Kincasslagh, Dungloe.

An online statement by Dungloe GAA said the club learned of Sean O’Donnell’s passing with “great sadness,” as they gave their sympathies to his family and friends.

It said: “One of the club’s all-time great footballers, Sean O’Donnell, had a distinguished playing career with Dungloe, Donegal, and Ulster.

“He was a double senior championship winner with Dungloe in 1957 and 1958, and his inter-county playing career with Donegal spanned two decades from 1955 to 1968.

“Recognised as one of the most stylish wing-backs in the game during his playing days, he was named at left half-back on the Dungloe team of the Millennium and was also inducted into the Dungloe Club Hall of Fame.

“He also managed Donegal at senior level and guided the county to the 1979 Ulster final.

“Sean O’Donnell was always held in the highest esteem by the club and will always be in the hearts and minds of all who played with him and had the good fortune to know him.”

Their statement concluded with: “Dungloe GAA was very dear to Sean and always held a special place in his heart.”

Sean O’Donnell was the beloved husband of the late Cora, much-loved father to Shauna (Seamus), Daragh (Miquel), Cahir (Miriam), cherished brother of Vinny, Beatrice, Celia, dearly beloved grandfather to Aoife (Joe), Conor, Clodagh, Aoibheann, Sean, Ronan, Eoghan, Aisling, Max, and Amina.

Predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Brigid, brother Ben, and sisters Sue, Anne, and Maura. Deeply regretted and lovingly remembered by his sons, daughter, brother, sisters, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, nephews, nieces, extended family, and many friends. 

Funeral leaving from his late residence on Tuesday, August 26 at 10.30am, for Requiem Mass in the Church of Mary Immaculate, Stranorlar at 11am.
