In pictures: Donegal Mela brings colour and fun to Letterkenny

From early afternoon the plaza was filled with music, the smells of international food and the beats of traditional dance, a real celebration of culture and community.

Organised by the Indian Community Centre in Letterkenny, supported by Donegal Arts Service, Donegal County Council’s Social Inclusion Unit and An Grianán Theatre, the festival showcased Indian culture alongside traditions from around the world.

Families enjoyed a packed programme of performances, food stalls, games and craft displays, with kids joining in the fun and visitors of all ages soaking up the atmosphere.

The event is part of Donegal County Council’s Black and Minority Ethnic Inclusion Strategy with support from the Council’s Arts Service and Social Inclusion Unit. The strategy is about ensuring that everyone feels welcome and included in the life of the county.

Cllr. Ciaran Brogan, Cathaoirleach of the Letterkenny–Milford Municipal District was in attendance and praised the work of the organisers, performers and volunteers who made the day possible. “Events like this remind us of the diversity that makes our community stronger and Donegal a great place to live,” he said.

The Mela’s mix of music, dance and food gave visitors a taste of Indian culture alongside other world traditions and highlighted the growing cultural diversity in Donegal itself. Now in its second year Donegal Mela is fast becoming a highlight of the county’s cultural calendar, bringing people together through food, friendship and the arts.
