Donegal GAA manager Jim McGuinness presenting Alan Patterson won the Donegal Sports Stars 2023 Para-Athlete Award
A Donegal sportsman left paralysed has managed to get to the international stage - and you can help him on his journey.
Alan Patterson from Killygordon suffered a life-changing trampoline accident in July 2016. He had played Hockey for Raphoe before moving to Instonians and was part of the team that won the Kirk Cup in 2015 scoring two goals in the final. Alan had also represented Ulster at U16 and U18 Schoolboy level.
After the accident, Alan had many setbacks but was determined to play sport again and has excelled at Wheelchair Rugby, graduating to the Ulster Barbarians Club squad.
He has since been drafted into the Irish Wheelchair Rugby Team and is part of the squad for the WWR European Championship next month.
A iDonate called Help Alan Patterson get to Norway for the European Championship Division C Competition next month has been set up.
“Hi everyone,” Alan writes. “My name is Alan Patterson, and I am incredibly proud to have been selected for the Irish Wheelchair Rugby national team squad. It is an honour to have the opportunity to represent Ireland at the upcoming 2025 WWR European Championship Division C competition in Norway from October 8-12.
“Our team is made up of dedicated players who have been training with immense passion and determination. However, as an amateur organisation, the financial hurdles to compete internationally are significant.
“To get to the championships, each player needs to raise approximately €2000. This amount will directly cover my essential expenses, including flights, accommodation and competition fees.
“By helping me reach my €2000 target, you will directly enable my participation in this career-defining tournament and allow me to focus entirely on performing at my very best for Ireland. Any contribution you can make, no matter the size, would make a world of difference and would be hugely appreciated. Thank you for considering this opportunity to support my journey. Go raibh maith agat, Alan.”
