A Donegal-born Bishop was among the participants in the annual meeting of the Irish Episcopal Conference and the Church of Ireland House of Bishops this week.
Bishop Niall Coll, the Bishop of Ossory, attended the meeting at the Church of Ireland Theological Institute in Dublin on Monday, September 22, 2025.
The ongoing tragedy in Gaza was among then topics discussed by the high-ranking clergy.
They also talked about the possible impacts of artificial intelligence within the Church and curricular developments in primary education.
This came in the same week where details of a new primary school curriculum - which will be phased in from next year - came to light. For the first time, all children in fifth and sixth classes will learn about different sexual orientations and the new syllabus also facilitates learning about puberty at an earlier stage than is currently the case.
All children will start to learn a foreign language in fifth class and there will be a far greater emphasis on STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).
Bishop Coll was joined by Bishops Larry Duffy, Martin Hayes, Brendan Leahy, Gerard Nash, Donal Roche and Michael Router on behalf of the Episcopal Conference while Bishop Michael Burrows, Bishop Ian Ellis, Archbishop Michael Jackson and Bishop Adrian Wilkinson attended on behalf of the House of Bishops.
The Bishops also discussed the perspectives on the papacy of Leo XIV as part of the gathering.
Discussions were said to have been “set in the context of the sharing of worship and hospitality”.
These meetings are held as part of an Irish response to the request some years ago from the International Anglican Roman Catholic Commission for Unity and Mission (IARCCUM) that there should be regular meetings between Anglican and Roman Catholic bishops in countries where both share a parallel diocesan structure.

The next such gathering will take place in Maynooth in September 2026.
In January 2023, Bishop Coll - a native of St Johnston - was ordained as the 96th Bishop of Ossory.
