Dunfanaghy Golf Course is due to create a new fifteenth hole, and will extend their course after earning planning permission from Donegal County Council.

Conditional permission was granted for the extension to the existing golf course, and to create a new hole, 15A, with all other associated site development works, including restoration works at various parts of the golf course.

The proposed plans would see works primarily affecting the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth holes to increase the course’s overall length and enhance its layout. Par would be changed from 68 to 70.

Michael Friel Architects and Surveyors Ltd, on behalf of Dunfanaghy Golf Club, said the improvements would form “part of a broader, phased development strategy.”

A submission to Donegal County Council read: “This adjustment will introduce greater variety, challenge, and enjoyment for players of all levels.

“It brings the course more in line with national and regional standards, making it more attractive to visiting golfers and tournament organisers alike.

“By improving the golfing experience and offering a more competitive and rewarding layout, the development is expected to support increased tourism and encourage new memberships. In doing so, it strengthens the long-term sustainability of the club and contributes positively to the local economy.

“The proposed extension has been carefully designed to make the most of the site’s natural beauty, offering golfers improved views over Sheephaven Bay and a more memorable experience overall.”

Donegal County Council gave four conditions for the granted planning permission, with reason including the integrity and preservation of designated EU habitats, and to prevent flooding.

It was also conditioned that the applicant should pay a contribution of €1,421.34, in respect of public infrastructure and facilities benefiting development in the area of the Planning Authority that is already provided or is intended will be provided by the Authority.
