Donegal County Council once again celebrated the Twin Town arrangement between Letterkenny and Rudolstadt, Germany by hosting a delegation of 55 visitors from the town of Rudolstadt.

The delegation was warmly welcomed and spent four days taking in some of the fantastic attractions that Donegal has to offer.

Many friendships have developed between the civic leaders and local people in the two towns through the twinning arrangement, which includes library and student exchanges, with yearly visits between the two towns taking place.

The delegation visited Grianán of Aileach before Mayor Jörg Reich of Rudolstadt and Letterkenny MD chairperson Ciaran Brogan led the speeches that evening, one where Culture Night 2025 was taking place.

A particularly touching moment: The band played 99 Luftballons by Nena. Not just a German classic – the song is woven into the theme: peace, recklessness, warning, and remembrance.

The following day took the group to Glenveagh National Park, Ireland's second-largest national park, and then on to Creeslough at Rose's Bar. Letterkenny native and Rudolstadt resident Karol Kerrane welcomed the group, who had also been surfing that afternoon.

Day three brought a visit to Slieve League, the highest accessible cliffs in Europe, and a visit to Donegal Town before Niamh Shevlin, world champion Irish dancer and the Donegal Rose, entertained the crowd in the Brewery Bar that evening back in Letterkenny

The last day in Donegal saw the visitors visit various sites, with some going to St Eunan's School and Errigal College in Letterkenny, others to Little Angels' new premises. A school partnership with the Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi special needs centre in Rudolstadt is also planned.

Others from the group visited Letterkenny's Old Town, while some took to the road to see Rathmullan and Portsalon, before the day officially ended with a celebratory dinner hosted by the Letterkenny administration. Council members, administrators, and teachers gathered together, exchanged ideas, and forged new friendships.

"Special thanks went to all the organisers, the hosts in Letterkenny, and Bri Carr, who made the evening an atmospheric experience with her music,"

"Thus, the last evening in Letterkenny came to an end. With a heavy heart, the delegation said goodbye to old and new friends. With a smile, they are already looking forward to seeing many of them again next year, for St Patrick's Weekend or the Rudolstadt Festival".
