A number of people have appeared in court charged with speeding in front of Donegal's first static speed camera.

The camera was erected on the N13 road between Manorcunningham and Letterkenny at Killyverry on December 20 last.

The summonses at Letterkenny District Court are among the first to be processed as a result of the installation of the fines.

Some of the people turned up in court to answer the summons. Speeding drivers caught exceeding the 100kph limit in the area face a fine of €160 accompanied by three penalty points. Judge Ciaran Liddy dealt with a number of people who did show up in court or were represented by a solicitor.

Many of those who appeared were given fines of €75 by the court. Those who did not appear had their cases put back for hearing on dates in March and May of next year.

One man caught by the fixed speed camera had his case put in for hearing after telling the court that he did not believe he was speeding at the time.

Another man faced three summonses after he was allegedly caught on camera speeding on three different occasions.
